The Canyons ski resort is huge...
A 'people mover' lift operates from the lower reaches of the resort property.
The lift will enable day visitors and overnight guests staying in lodging properties downhill from the resort village core to access the mountain without riding shuttle buses.
Back in 2002, The Canyons was known as Wolfe Mountain, Park City's number three resorts, and the place locals learned to ski. Residents are flabbergasted at the speed and extent of its transformation into a major ski destination.
Since acquiring it in July 1997, the present owners have installed nine new lifts; seven high-speed express quads and a triple chair in addition to the eight-passenger gondola and opened 1,200 new ski able acres on eight peaks.
A total of 500 rooms and a pedestrian village are planned for completion by the end of this year.
Sound familiar?
New England skiers may recognize the bold, Midas touch of Maine-based Les Otten and his American Ski Co., owner of no fewer than six of this region's major ski resorts and three more spaced across the West.
Sunday River (Otten's Maine base of operations) skiers would also recognize something about the Canyons' terrain.
It consists of 8 distinct mountains and offers every possible winter sport including skiing, bobsledding, dog sledding, trap shooting, alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, snowmobile, snowshoeing & cross-country skiing.
The Canyons also provides easy access to backcountry skiing for experts. "It's really backcountry skiing with lifts," says Angus Beavers, an avid skier and well-liked, savvy Canyons realtor.
There also are a lot of runs for so-so skiers, who avoid the center-mountain lift, Ninety-Nine 90 Express, which lets its passengers out at 9,900 feet for mostly double-black diamonds and backcountry skiing.
Although The Canyons is a large ski system one never feels it thanks to the many aspen and fir-covered areas bordering groomed runs. Many skiers take advantage of this for tree skiing.
"The Canyons participates in aggressive avalanche control in the area of slides.
Explosives and other safety measures are performed during avalanche season and the Utah Avalanche Center has listed slide danger in the area of the western Uintas as considerable," says, Angus. "Avalanche experts recommend that skiers, snowmobiles and snowboarders learn about the dangers of slides before hitting the slopes.
I always recommend carrying safety gear such as beacons, probes, shovels and a lightweight backpack. Most avalanche victims have only 15 minutes to live after being buried in snow, according to the avalanche center."
Many skiers enjoy getting up before dawn to engage in something called First Tracks.
For $100, a limited number of skiers get a chance to spend about an hour or so on the Canyons' slopes alone with a couple of ski guides, followed by an all-you-can-eat breakfast at the Red Pine Lodge.
First Tracks is for all levels, albeit in our group, most were advanced to expert.
You'll be taken up 9,000 feet in what will feel like 0-degree weather, and for a minute or two, you'll forget the bone-chilling winds as you watch one of the most gorgeous sunrises in a lifetime: golden orange, creeping up and finally spilling over opposing mountain ridges.
No need to ski, really. Just watching the sunrise will suffice. It's a very quiet, serene setting. The snow is usually packed, but there were no grooves or moguls, so it is just smooth sailing and surreal.
A shuttle carries residents to and from their cars and homes via a European-style, open-air rail system. Summit County is well known for its aggressive development-control politics, which stems from American Skiing Co.'s intentions to keep The Canyons a fun, safe, family-vacation destination.
American Skiing Co. has spent over $150 million on the Canyons, which will include 300,000 square feet of resort retail space, an open-air ice-skating rink and a cobblestone village decorated with statuary and fire pits. How about that for fun and opulence!
And if you don't ski, why not attend the Sundance Film Festival.
In the summer, The Canyons offers high-grade music festivals at the Canyons Plaza, horseback riding, balloon rides, trap shooting, championship golf, tennis, mountain biking, day hikes, boating, bass fishing, water sports, fly fishing and extraordinary back country hiking.
There are four major lodging components in the village core at The Canyons: the Grand Summit quarter share hotel, whole-ownership condominiums, whole-ownership town homes and timeshare.
Westgate represents the timeshare component in the village core.
They're a company with a proven track record, and have more than 150,000 owners in their network.
The Sundial Lodge, the first phase of full-ownership condominiums at The Canyons, was completely sold out and that the Grand Summit Resort Hotel is also sold out. The resort's new Whisper Ridge Town home project is slowly gathering momentum.
30 mins away from Salt Lake City sits Utah's rising star, The Canyons Resort. It's easy to feel harmonious just a couple of hours after landing at the Salt Lake City airport.
This is a great selling point for Utah resorts. Most of them are less than an hour from the airport, so you can get at least half a day of skiing on the day of arrival.
Unsurpassed in beauty and offering activities for everyone, The Canyons has quickly risen to become the 5th largest ski resort in the country. Ranked alongside Vail (Vail Resorts was dying to purchase this resort 10 years ago) & Aspen in quality and beauty.
American Skiing spends over $10 million a year to expand and upgrade chair lifts and ski terrain.
With service in mind The Canyons offers the Little Adventurers Children's Center, the Snow Canyon Terrain Park and the perfect Turn Ski and Snowboard School. The Canyons offers condos, town homes, hotel timeshares and single-family homes.
The Silverado Lodge, the Escala Lodges, Sunrise at Escala and the Dakota Mountain Lodge are where we would take you for condo sales.
The Vintage on The Strand, Le Chateau DuVal, Juniper Landing and The Colony are built around single-family homes and townhouses.
And the Grand Summit Resort Hotel and the Sundial Lodge are where the resales are.
A mountainside one-bedroom suite at the Canyons Grand Summit Hotel comes with a fireplace and mountain views it's the main place of lodging in the Canyons, which is always expanding and renovating to include more lodging and food options.
The Grand Summit architecture includes exposed wooden beams.
The Canyons' resort village already is home to over 8 restaurants and various stores and the lovely Grand Summit Health Club and Spa features a large heated outdoor swimming pool that's equally popular among the beer-drinking and the Kool-Aid drinking crowds.
Staying at the Canyons for food and entertainment is ok if you are there for a few nights but residents can take the free shuttle (7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily) to Park City to party.
Park City has dozens of excellent restaurants and several music venues.
