Park City Real Estate Information
Park City is located in the Wasatch Mountains in northern Utah, about 32 miles east of Salt Lake City.
The altitude ranges from 6,800 feet to 8,500 feet above sea level.
Park City was established as a silver mining community in the late 1860's.
Over the following 50 years the silver boom brought thousands of people to the area, giving Park City a population of 10,000 at its height, with over 100 saloons and a thriving red-light district.
George Hearst, whose family was to later found the Hearst newspaper empire, made millions from the Ontario Mine.
A fire destroyed much of the town in 1898.
In the 1930's mineral prices dropped due to the depression and caused Park City's economy and population to wane. In the 1950's, it was nearly a ghost town
However, in a glimpse of what was to come, in 1963 the Park City Consolidated Mines built the first ski lifts on what was then called Treasure Mountain.
The city rebounded during the 1980's and 1990's in the tourism business. The city has three major ski resorts: Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and The Canyons Resort.
The Park City and Deer Valley ski resorts were the major locations for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Additionally the city is the main location of the United States's largest independent film festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and is home to the United States Ski Team.
